U.S. Aerialist Injured in Fall
IIZUNA KOGEN, Japan (AP) _ Mariano Ferrario of the United States injured his left knee during the qualifying round of freestyle aerials Monday.
``I blew out my knee,″ he told his mother, Marta, as he was led away for treatment. Team officials said the injury appeared to involve ligament damage.
Ferrario sat back on the landing of his second jump and rolled onto his right side, sliding to the bottom of the slope. Medical officials rushed to his aid and a stretcher was brought to the scene.
After a few minutes, Ferrario was carried off the slope by two team officials, his arms draped around their shoulders.
Ferrario, 24, from Winston-Salem, N.C., is ranked 14th in the current World Cup standings. This was his first Olympic Games.
Ferrario finished 15th in the preliminary round and failed to qualify for Wednesday’s final.
