AKRON, Ohio (AP) _ Raymont Small caught a 25-yard touchdown pass and ran 5 yards for another score as Akron defeated Northern Illinois 17-7 on Saturday.

Small, who finished with three receptions for 48 yards, caught the TD pass from Jeff Switzer early in the second quarter for a 7-0 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, Northern Illinois (1-7) fumbled and Akron recovered.

Switzer then drove the Zips (4-4) 35 yards on four plays, and Small capped the drive with his second TD for a 14-0 lead with 9:36 left in the half.

The Huskies got their only score with 6:20 left in the half on a 5-yard pass from Rob Rugai to William Patrick. But Akron added Daron Alcorn’s 38-yard field goal and Huskies could get no closer than Akron’s 43-yard line in the second half.

Rugai led Northern Illinois in rushing with 12 carries for 52 yards, nearly half the Huskies’ 108 total rushing yards. Akron’s offense was led by Tyrone Nelson, who gained 66 yards on 16 carries, and Marlon Jacobs, with nine rushes for 65 yards, as the Zips rolled up 225 yards on the ground.
