WSC men finish 8th, women 6th at Briar Cliff Cross Country Invite

MEN

The Wayne State College men’s cross country team placed eighth out of 12 teams with a score of 157 points Saturday morning at the Briar Cliff Invitational held at Adams Nature Preserve in McCook Lake, South Dakota. Individually, junior Dylan Kessler was the top finisher coming in 12th place overall.

Dordt College was the men’s team champion with 57 points followed by Doane in second at 83 points. Northwestern of Iowa (107), Morningside (124) and Dakota State (130) closed out the top five teams with Wayne State taking eighth overall at 157 points.

Dylan Kessler was one of three Wildcat runners to place in the top 30 overall out of a field of 145 runners. Kessler crossed the line in 12th place at 26:08 followed by Isaias Solorio and Bailey Peckham in 29th and 30thplace overall with times of 26:46.

Other Wildcat runners included – Brock Hegarty (51st – 27:20), Nathan Hiemer (81st – 28:12), Nathan Pearson (83rd – 28:15), Bryce Holcomb (84th – 28:15), Garrett Wells (89th – 28:25), Jesus Arellano (92nd – 28:30) and Jakob Kemper (98th – 29:05).

WOMEN

Sophomore Molly McCartney placed ninth out of a field of 166 runners to lead the Wayne State College women’s cross country team to a sixth place team finish Saturday morning at the Briar Cliff Invitational held at the Adams Nature Preserve in North Sioux City, South Dakota. The Wildcats scored 168 points to place sixth out of 14 teams competing in the meet.

Dordt captured the women’s team title with 59 points, ahead of second place Hastings College at 77. Northwestern of Iowa (81), Concordia (Neb.) with 83 and Morningside (92) rounded out the top five teams with Wayne State sixth with 168 points.

McCartney, a sophomore from Lawrence-Nelson HS, was the top Wildcat finisher coming in ninth overall out of 166 runners with a time of 18:48 on the 5,000-meter course. Wayne freshman Andrea Torres was next in 32nd place at 19:30 with Syracuse junior Kim Lowman 39th overall with a time of 19:39.
