American Kerrin Petty Wins 30-kilometer Marathon
MORA, Sweden (AP) _ American Kerrin Petty won the women’s 30-kilometer Vasaloppet cross-country ski race Saturday, beating Sweden’s Magdalena Wallin by 11 seconds.
Petty, from Townshend, Vt., clocked one hour, 32 minutes, 9 seconds. It was her second victory in the world’s most famous ski marathon, having won for the first time in 1994 after competing in the Lillehammer Olympics.
Petty, who last month became the first American to win a Swedish championship title when she captured the 10K classical style race in Umea, is based in Sweden and competes for a club in Mora.
Wallin, who also is a superb biathlete and won a bronze in the recent World Championships in Germany, finished more than three minutes ahead of Petty’s club teammate Lotta Ekberg.
More than 5,500 racers finished the race.
The men’s Vasaloppet over 90 kilometers will be held early next month.
