Lehigh 84, Towson St. 78
TOWSON, Md. (AP) _ Daren Queenan scored 37 points and Mike Polaha 24 Tuesday night as Lehigh earned an NCAA Tournament berth with an 84-78 victory over Towson State in the championship game of the East Coast Conference basketball tournament.
Polaha, who scored 83 points in three games, was named the tournament’s most valuable player, as he was in 1985 when Lehigh last won the tournament. Queenan added 79 points in the three games for Lehigh, 21-9, increasing his career total to 2,682 points, 12th on the NCAA Division I career scoring list.
Towson State, which finished 14-16, fell behind 11-0 and trailed 43-30 at halftime before rallying. Towson tied it with 10:53 remaining and was within 71-70 with 4:11 remaining. But Polaha scored four points and Queenan two as Lehigh moved out to a safe seven-point lead.
Marty Johnson and Tommy Jones each scored 19 points for Towson, which for the second straight year reached the conference final with a sub-.500 record.
Jones and Johnson joined Queenan and Polaha on the all-tournament team, which also included Ron Simpson of Rider College.
