RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — A California man who authorities say tried to carjack two vehicles near Lake Mathews, and then died when he was struck by a third, has been identified.

The Press-Enterprise reports the Riverside County coroner says Christian Chavez died shortly before 9 p.m. Friday in a roadway just east of the Lake Mathews Estelle Mountain Reserve.

The California Highway Patrol says Chavez was walking along Cajalco Road when he was clipped by a car when it tried to avoid hitting him. California Highway Patrol Sgt. Erick Helvie says when the driver of that car pulled over to check on Chavez, he got into the passenger seat and unsuccessfully tried to steal the car.

Authorities say Chavez, after failing to carjack another vehicle, fell into the westbound lane, where he was struck by a vehicle that also fled.
