Capital rolls into AAA semifinals after 48-14 defeat of Hedgesville
CHARLESTON — Kerry Martin Jr. threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score as Capital topped visiting Hedgesville 48-14 in the Class AAA quarterfinals Saturday at University of Charleston Stadium.
Capital (11-1), the No. 3 seed, plays at No. 2 Spring Valley (12-0) in next weekend’s semifinal round. The date and time will be determined Sunday.
Martin completed 19 of 29 passes for 274 yards, finding brother Kerion Martin with a 34-yard scoring toss and Shawn James with a 7-yarder. Kerry Martin also carried 10 times for 104 yards and a TD. Kalai Clark had a pair of scoring runs for Capital.
Hedgesville (7-5), the No. 11 seed, fell behind 23-0 at halftime while being limited to 43 total yards. Eagles quarterback Hunter Coe hit on 12 of 30 passes for 191 yards, including a 74-yard TD heave to Owie Ash on the game’s final play. Coe also ran for a score.
FAIRMONT SENIOR 66, POINT PLEASANT 13: The Class AA top-seeded Polar Bears (12-0) scored touchdowns on all four of their first-half possessions against No. 8 Point Pleasant (9-2).
The Polar Bears outgained the Big Blacks 364 yards to 174.
MARTINSBURG 49, PARKERSBURG 20: Grant Harman and Naieem Kearney both scored a pair of touchdowns Saturday for the Class AAA No. 1 Bulldogs (12-0) against No. 9 Parkersburg (7-5).
Harman had two touchdown passes and two scoring runs. Kearney caught one TD pass from Harman and one from Elijah Banks.
BLUEFIELD 35, KEYSER 0: The second-rated defending Class AA champion Beavers (11-1) had to wait a day when their game Friday was postponed because of bad weather in the southern part of West Virginia, but had no trouble handling the No. 7 Golden Tornado (9-3).
WEIR 63, NICHOLAS CO. 43: Donavan Kirby ran 28 times for 235 yards and four touchdowns as Class AA No. 12 Weir (10-2) took down No. 4 Nicholas County (11-1) in the Class AA state quarterfinals.
Sebastian Spencer carried seven times for 129 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
BRIDGEPORT 42, RCB 7: Jake Bowen rushed for 238 yards and three TDs and the Bridgeport defense held Robert C. Byrd’s high-powered offense to just 191 total yards in Class AA at Wayne Jamison Field.
The third-seeded Indians (11-1) took advantage of two fumbles by the sixth-seeded Eagles (9-3) and added a pair of long first-half scoring drives in moving to a 28-0 lead at the break.
DODDRIDGE CO. 27, CAMERON 0: Hunter America ran for 210 yards as the Class A fourth-seeded Bulldogs (12-0) cruised at Morris Stadium on the campus of Glenville State College. Fifth-seeded Cameron’s final record is 11-1.
WHEELING CENTRAL 40, MAGNOLIA 19: Class A No. 1 Wheeling Central (11-1) avenged its lone loss of the season against ninth-seeded Magnolia (8-3) in impressive fashion at Brooke High School.
Curtis McGhee III completed 17 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for another score. Luke Duplaga recovered two fumbles in the end zone for touchdowns.
