Two Get Death for Torture Slayings
MIAMI (AP) _ Two men were sentenced to death in the killing of a wealthy couple whose bodies were dismembered, put in 55-gallon drums and buckets and left at roadsides.
Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Alex Ferrer gave Adrian Noel Doorbal, 24, Daniel Lugo, 32, two death sentences each for the 1995 slayings of Frank Griga, 33, and Kirsztina Furton, 23, both originally from Hungary.
Prosecutors said Lugo and Doorbal belonged to a gang that stalked Miami’s social elite, kidnapped and then tortured them for extortion.
Griga, who made a $10 million fortune in 1-900 phone sex numbers, was fatally hit over the head during a struggle at a Miami Lakes apartment. Furton died of an overdose of animal tranquilizer when the gang tried to force her to divulge the security code to their Golden Beach home.
Their bodies were dismembered by chain saw and ax, burned, then left in roadside containers in the hopes the couple would not be identified.
A third defendant, John Carl Mese, escaped the electric chair.
