Final Vermont school merger plan would create 11 districts

December 2, 2018

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Vermont has released a final plan to merge 45 districts in 39 towns to form 11 new union school districts.

Vermont Public Radio reports the State Board of Education plan released Friday also extends three existing districts. Meanwhile, nearly 30 communities plan to take their fight against the forced mergers to court.

Overall, the plan reduces 34 districts across Vermont.

The state’s education agency says 63 percent of Vermont’s K-12 students will live in a new union school district by July 2019.

Supporters said the 2015 school merger law will lead to more equity among the children in larger districts.
