The Umpqua Community College women’s basketball team survived its toughest test of the young season on Sunday.

The Riverhawks, trailing by nine entering the fourth quarter, outscored Clackamas 26-14 and pulled out a 102-99 win on the final day of the Clackamas Thanksgiving Invitational at Randall Hall in Oregon City.

Sophomore guard Taylor Stricklin led Umpqua (4-0) with a college career-high 31 points, 16 coming in the first half. Stricklin, who played the entire game, was 11 of 20 from the field and 4 of 5 from the free-throw line, hitting five 3-pointers. She also had eight assists.

Freshman guard Cielo Gonzalez added a season-high 27 points and seven assists for the Riverhawks, who overcame 26 turnovers. The Springfield High product also played the full 40 minutes, sinking five 3s and converting all six of her foul shots.

Also scoring in double figures for Umpqua were reserve Lexi Woodard (13 points), Grace Campbell (12) and Sienna Riggle (10). Woodard grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double, and Riggle pulled down 11 rebounds for a double-double. Former Douglas High standout Darian Mitchell just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 boards.

UCC held a 52-34 rebounding advantage. The Riverhawks shot 54.2 percent (39-for-72) from the field, compared to 43.7 percent (38-for-87) for the Cougars.

“It was a great game from a fan’s standpoint,” UCC coach Dave Stricklin said. “Both teams have to be disappointed with what they did defensively. But the key (in the fourth quarter) was we kept playing. We played really good defense the last 3 1/2 minutes and got some big rebounds.”

Clackamas (1-2) had five players finish in double figures, led by Mary Stewart with 26 points. The Cougars were 17 of 40 from 3-point range and made 15 steals.

The Riverhawks will play in the Centralia Tournament Dec. 7-9.
