Rico Hines Won’t Be Attending UCLA
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Rico Hines, who signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at UCLA last May, won’t be enrolling as a freshman this fall because of academic reasons, athletic director Peter T. Dalis said Tuesday.
Hines fell just short of meeting the NCAA initial eligibility requirements because a core course his high school submitted was not deemed acceptable by the NCAA, UCLA said.
The NCAA Council Subcommittee on Initial Eligibility Waivers has denied UCLA’s petition on behalf of Hines, and UCLA does not accept non-qualifiers.
Hines, a 6-foot-4 guard from Saint John’s at Prospect Hall in Frederick, Md., averaged 11.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.4 steals as a senior last season.
