Louisiana Tech 59, McNeese St. 58
RUSTON, La. (AP) _ Twelfth-ranked Louisiana Tech, an overtime survivor two nights ago at Southwestern Louisiana, got a tip-in from Karl Malone with one second to play Saturday night to escape with a 59-58 victory over McNeese State in a Southland Conference basketball game.
It was a turnabout from the teams’ first meeting of the season, when Tech routed McNeese, 88-69.
Malone, Tech’s top scorer, finished with 13 against McNeese and yielded point production honors to teammate Robert Godbolt, who had 19. Willie Simmons also had 14 points for Tech, now 22-2 overall and the Southland leader with an 8-1 record.
Joe Dumars’ 22 points led McNeese, 14-9 and 6-3, while Kenny Jimerson had 16 for the Cowboys.
Tech surrendered the lead it held most of the first half when McNeese took charge, going ahead by 30-28 at halftime. After Tech again took the lead at 33-32 on Simmons’ hook shot, the lead changed hands more than a half-dozen times after that.
McNeese took a 58-57 lead with 41 seconds remaining, but Tech worked for the final shot and Malone got it with one second remaining.
