Scholastic Superstar Ericka Pica

Ericka Pica takes great pride in the accomplishments of Holy Cross’ mock trial team this year. The team won the state championship in March and placed ninth at the national championship this month. The distinguished honors student and member of the National Honor Society earned medals in both the National Latin and Spanish exams. She has won numerous awards for her writing and composition, including the Barbara Hoffman English Award. The daughter of Erin and Richard Pica also participates in the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science and has earned numerous awards, including a five-year state and regional perseverance award, state and regional first awards and state and regional second awards. She has also earned college credits through the Immaculate Heart of Mary Scholars Program. Ericka’s passion for social justice, law and human rights have fostered her interest in criminal justice. She also has a love for her community. She has volunteered with the Green Ridge Teener League concession stand, the school’s annual craft fair and pasta dinner, as a basketball camp counselor and within the Anthracite Heritage Museum as a curatorial assistant. She has taken on activism by participating in the March for Our Lives and shadowed with Sen. John Blake in Harrisburg. Ericka said she most admires her mother. “Her grit and tenacity, exemplified daily in her outstanding work performance, motivates me to become the leader who inspires respect and confidence in her team,” Ericka said. “She encourages me to rise above my circumstances, to shatter the glass ceiling. She inspires me to be a woman.” — SARAH HOFIUS HALL
