Dodgers’ Coach Jack Clark Ejected

July 18, 2001

PITTSBURGH (AP) _ Los Angeles Dodgers coach Jack Clark threw his cap at home plate umpire Mark Hirschbeck and kicked dirt on the plate while being ejected in the first inning Monday night from a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Clark, the former St. Louis slugger who is in his first season as the Dodgers batting coach, exchanged words with Hirschbeck during the top of the first, apparently over ball-strike calls when Shawn Green was batting.

During the half-inning break, Clark came onto the field to argue with Hirschbeck and, despite being restrained by manager Jim Tracy, was ejected. Clark began to leave the field but, apparently upset with something Hirschbeck said, returned to continue the argument.

After kicking dirt on home plate, Clark took off his cap and threw it at Hirschbeck, hitting him about chest high. Hirschbeck responded by kicking the cap twice as Clark threw several bats onto the field before going down the dugout runway.

Hirschbeck declined to wipe off the plate before play resumed so Dodgers catcher Paul Lo Duca did so, drawing a cheer from the crowd.
