Lame Connors Wins Citibank Opener
PURCHASE, N.Y. (AP) _ Top-seeded Jimmy Connors, hampered by a tender left foot, narrowly defeated Australian John Fitzgerald 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) Tuesday in the rain-delayed first round of the Citibank Champions senior tennis tournament at Manhattanville College.
Connors, the four-time defending champion of this event, kept Fitzgerald at bay with his classic deep groundstrokes and advanced to the quarterfinals where he will meet the winner of Wednesday’s match between Eddie Dibbs and John Lloyd.
Because of the rain delay, Tuesday’s second match, between Jose Luis Clerc and Mansour Bahrami, was postponed until Thursday afternoon.
John McEnroe, the No. 2 seed in the 16-man, $200,000 tournament, plays Shlomo Glickstein of Israel in their opening match Wednesday night.
The Citibank Champions is the sixth event on the 1998-99 Nuveen Tour and the ninth event on the ATP Tour-sanctioned worldwide senior tennis circuit.
