Cargo Plane Crashes in Siberia

November 11, 1998

MOSCOW (AP) _ A Russian cargo plane crashed into the woods near the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk today, killing as many as 14 people.

The Emergency Situations Ministry and Russian media reports said all on board were killed, but they gave conflicting figures on how many people were on the plane, ranging from 12 to 14.

The AN-12 aircraft, loaded with food, went down and exploded into flames moments after taking off from Krasnoyarsk, where it had refueled. It was traveling on to the Siberian town of Mirny, said Irina Andriyanova, a spokeswoman with the Emergency Situations Ministry in Moscow.

A rescue helicopter was sent to the site of the burning wreck just outside the city, but there were no survivors, officials said.

There were seven crew members on the plane and up to seven people accompanying the cargo, officials said.
