AAUW Book Fair returns March 1 and has new location

January 30, 2019

The Aiken Branch of the American Association of University Women has a new location for its Books ‘n’ Things Fair.

This year’s edition of the event will be held Friday, March 1, and Saturday, March 2, at the former site of Bargain Blowouts Furniture, 240 University Parkway.

Aiken Regional Medical Centers owns the property now.

“We really appreciate the hospital letting us use this building,” said Aiken Branch President Martha Ebel. “It’s clean, it’s roomy and it’s all on one level. Whenever we have a problem, we call maintenance at the hospital and they come and fix it.”

The Books ‘n’ Things Fair, which is the Aiken Branch’s biggest fundraiser, offers thousands of hardback and paperback books for bargain prices along with knick knacks, CDs, DVDs and other items.

Proceeds are used to fund college scholarships, GED programs, high school education and reading programs. Approximately 80 percent of the money supports education in Aiken County. About 20 percent goes to the AAUW’s educational efforts nationally.

On Tuesdays and Saturdays through Feb. 26, people can bring donations for the Books ‘n’ Things Fair to the former site of Bargain Blowouts Furniture from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The first day donations will be accepted is Saturday, Feb. 2.

Amy Congelton and Fran Bush are the chairpersons for the 2019 Books ‘n’ Things Fair.

The hours for the event will be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on March 1 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 2.
