TORONTO (AP) _ Buffalo Sabres goaltender Dominik Hasek missed Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals on Sunday because of a groin injury.

The injury flared after practice Saturday, and the star goalie removed himself from the lineup before the opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

A Sabres spokesman said Hasek wanted to see how he felt after a night's sleep. But his condition did not sufficiently improve and he was not on the ice for the pregame warmup.

Dwayne Roloson started in goal for the Sabres. Martin Biron was recalled from the AHL farm club in Rochester, N.Y., to be the backup.
