Boy Dies After Jeep Window Closes on His Head

July 3, 1987

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) _ A 12-year-old boy died today after the electric tailgate window of his family’s jeep closed on his head, police said.

Brian Karp of Farmingdale was rushed to Nassau County Medical Center in East Meadow following the accident Thursday, and died there several hours later of neck injuries, said Nassau County police.

The boy was inside the 1988 Jeep Wagoneer, packing it for a family trip, when the back window automatically started to close, catching him around the neck, Officer Robert Wheeler said. The vehicle was parked in front of the Karp house.

Brian’s mother, Barbara, came out of the house a short time later and found her son trapped by the window. She freed him by breaking the glass, Wheeler said.
