Church members give away blankets, clothing to those in need

January 27, 2019

Rainy weather couldn’t stop members of Ministerio Cristo es el Camino from setting up in Market Square on Saturday to give out breakfast, blankets and other items during “Love in Action.”

Pastor Armando Marquez said he developed the idea last year and held three events, with the last one at Christmas. They were prepared to serve about 200 to 250 people, he added. Church members gave away hygiene kits, around 30 sleeping bags, clothing and small children’s toys. People who attended the event lined up for a haircut or a shave.

“ We don’t stop because of the rain. We do it because we want to share with the community. I saw the need” to help the homeless, Marquez said. “We really want to supply everyone, but we can’t do it alone. We need help.”

Aurora Bermudez, secretary at Ministerio Cristo es el Camino, said around 25 to 30 church members took part in making “Love in Action” happen. Church volunteers planned to also visit bus stations and hospitals to donate supplies to people in need.

“ They’re so excited, and they said, ‘There’s a lot of people who really need it,’” she said. “We’re going to keep doing it. The water tried to stop us, but no.”

United Airlines out of Houston supplied the blankets and hygiene kits, he said, and Agua Dental was on hand to give away toothbrushes. Anyone who wants to help with the effort is welcome, he added.

“ We hope that God supplies us so we can (go) to different cities,” Marquez said. “This is something that makes us feel good, to give to the people.”

Bermudez said now is a time for giving, and she hopes people who attend the events feel the love.

“ We really have a heart to care,” she said.
