Image of Asia: Well-wishes for the US ambassador in Seoul
In this photo by Lee Jin-man, South Koreans hold candles in downtown Seoul in support of U.S. Ambassador Mark Lippert, who was slashed on his face and wrist by an anti-U.S. protester screaming demands for uniting North and South Korea. Earlier Thursday, South Koreans shouted slogans denouncing the attack and North Korea’s leaders and supporting the U.S.-South Korean alliance. Small to medium-sized demonstrations regularly occur across Seoul, and most are peaceful. But the suspect, Kim Ki-jong, 55, was known to police and activists as one of a hard-core group of protesters willing to use violence to highlight their causes. Photos from last week show Kim and other activists rallying in front of the U.S. Embassy to protest U.S.-South Korean military drills that started Monday and run through April.
