Only one running for Kankakee park board

December 20, 2018

KANKAKEE — Two seats are up on the Kankakee Valley Park District board for April’s election. Only one person is running.

Derek Mullady, owner of Island View Marina, entered his name in the April election. Terms last six years.

The seats held by Matt Mullady and Duane Tucker are expiring, but they decided against running again.

Roy Collins, the district’s former executive director, last year pleaded guilty to corruption-related charges in relation to his actions while he was the director. He will be sentenced next month. Tucker and Matt Mullady were board members when the Collins controversy unfolded.

Unless a write-in candidate emerges, one of the two board seats will be unfilled when the new terms begin in May. The board has the power to appoint someone to fill that position for a two-year term.

“Traditionally, what park districts do is they ask for applicants and review resumes and letters of interest,” Dayna Heitz, the new executive director, said in an interview.

Derek Mullady couldn’t be reached for immediate comment.
