Beets lead to awards for street official
Fort Wayne’s street commissioner was awarded two Izaak Walton League awards for conservation, officials announced Monday.
Street Commissioner Brian Shimkus was recognized with the organization’s highest awards, from both the national organization and the Indiana Division of the Izaak Walton League.
Shimkus received the awards for his work using beet juice to reduce the amount of road salt necessary for winter streets.
Although road salt is the most common method of controlling icy streets, the salt can be absorbed through the soil into the watershed, causing problems for plant and animal life.
“This is why Fort Wayne’s Street Commission, under the leadership of Shimkus is so very noteworthy and can serve as a model for other communities across the United States to follow,” Danielle Donkersloot, IWLA clean water program director, said in a statement.
