Sonny Bill Williams out for 6 weeks with knee injury
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — All Blacks center Sonny Bill Williams will be sidelined for six weeks after undergoing knee surgery, endangering his prospects of appearing at a third Rugby World Cup later this year.
Williams injured his right knee in last weekend’s Super Rugby match between the Auckland-based Blues and Cape Town-based Stormers and now faces surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation.
The World Cup begins in Japan on Sept. 20 and Williams’ long absence puts in jeopardy what was thought to be his automatic selection for New Zealand.
His season has already been affected by other injuries, giving the All Blacks selection little chance to accurately judge his form.
Blues coach Leon MacDonald said Williams remains “driven to recover well from this injury and get back on the field.”
