Graf headed back to state girls tennis tournament
EAST TROY — Jefferson senior Morgan Graf earned her second trip to the WIAA State Individual Girls Tennis Tournament with a third place finish at No. 1 singles at the East Troy sectional on Wednesday.
Graf (23-3) defeated New Berlin West’s Allie Schaper 6-1, 6-2 to automatically qualify for state. She lost her next two matches to Catholic Memorial’s Lauren Kerson 6-2, 6-4 and Prairie School’s Gabriella Davis 6-1, 6-0.
“Her three losses are to three really good players,” Jefferson girls tennis coach Steve Rogers said. “I’m glad for her that she was able to get to state without having to do special qualifier. She improved on all the aspects of her game. She’s one of the best I’ve had at the net.”
Jefferson junior Anna Kallsen (20-6) placed second at No. 2 singles. She beat Catholic Memorial’s Emily Dorow 6-0, 6-1, then lost to East Troy’s Syd Raddeman 6-2, 2-6, 3-6.
At No. 2 doubles, Jefferson seniors Jenna Dinkel and Lizzie Meyers (23-5) lost to Catholic Memorial juniors Alex Sturm and Mia Rossi 6-3, 1-6, 1-6 and defeated Prairie School seniors Libby Antonneau and Brooke Foster 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
“We played pretty well today, I thought,” Rogers said. “They had great seasons. I’m going to put Anna up for a special qualifier. Someone on the seeding committee suggested it.”
Luther Prep sent two doubles teams to the sectional.
The No. 1 doubles team of sophomores Alethia Schmidt and Abigail Schewe lost their first round match and finished the season 5-1. The No. 3 team of seniors Tabitha Vannieuwenhoven and Terra Hundt finished 1-1 and placed fourth.
Catholic Memorial won the sectional with 45 points. East Troy (35), Kenosha St. Joseph (26), The Prairie School (23) and Jefferson (22) rounded out the top five. Luther Prep scored eight points to tie for ninth out of 18 teams.
The WIAA State Individual Girls Tennis Tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison begins Thursday, Oct. 11, and concludes Saturday, Oct. 13.
