CYS encourages more people to learn about child fostering
There is a drastic shortage of foster parents in Somerset County, according to Children and Youth Services officials. In October, there were 106 kids waiting for homes.
“More and more children are in need of out-of-home care,” said CYS Administrator Doug Walters.
To bring more attention to the shortage, CYS held an adoption awareness event at Somerset Area High School on Saturday.
CYS also has difficulties with keeping siblings together and placing teenagers in foster homes all while trying to keep children in their home school districts.
CYS caseworker Laurie Deist said that there are some requirements for foster parents, such as family values, physical fitness, childcare clearances and a sense of humor.
