Four people injured, one critically, in three-vehicle crash

December 20, 2018

Four people were injured, including an infant, in a three-vehicle crash Monday afternoon on U.S. Highway 75 near Beaver Lake.

Investigators from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office said Leonard Kaffenberger, 63, of Murray, was trying to turn left from Highway 75 into a private drive about 2 p.m. when his pickup was struck from behind by a 2015 Ford Fusion. Kaffenberger’s 1992 Chevrolet truck was pushed into the northbound lane and collided with a northbound 2015 Dodge Durango driven by Mariah Husen, 26, of Nebraska City.

Kaffenberger was taken by medical helicopter to the Nebraska Medical Center in critical condition but later was upgraded to serious, a hospital spokeswoman said Tuesday. Husen and a 10-month-old child were taken to the Nebraska Medical Center by ambulance with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening.

The driver of the Fusion, Ashley Baumgart, 22, of Plattsmouth, was taken to Nebraska Medicine-Bellevue by ambulance.
