Havasu teen killed in car crash on State Route 95
A Lake Havasu High School student was killed early Tuesday morning in a single-vehicle car crash on State Route 95.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Johnathon Mendez, 17, was driving southbound on the highway near mile marker 194, near Havasu Heights, when his vehicle drifted off the road to the left.
The car then re-entered the road, rolling over. DPS Public Information Officer Quentin Mehr said Mendez died at the scene.
Mendez was a junior at Lake Havasu High School.
On Tuesday morning, Principal Scott Becker sent out a text alert to families of students at the high school: “It is with a very heavy heart that I share with you one of our students was in an accident last night and lost his life. This student has been in our district for some time now and was an 11th grader at LHHS this year.”
Becker went on to say the school would offer grief counselors for students and staff in the library, and would make also make staff counselors and outside agencies available.
Mendez’s mother posted on Facebook that officers told her they believe her son fell asleep behind the wheel.
Mendez’s family set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for his burial in Fallbrook, California.
