Festival to feature fall food and fun galore
HURRICANE — Chili with a strong chance of doughnuts will be in the forecast — and the air — for the 2018 incarnation of the Hurricane Harvest Festival on Saturday.
Taking place at Hurricane City Park, Hurricane’s annual Harvest Festival is scheduled for noon until 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29. The free, yearly event will appease and please any appetite in the family, with a variety of food trucks parked and serving on site.
City of Hurricane Marketing and Development Manager Amanda Ramey said the Harvest Festival has been conducted in Hurricane for more than a decade.
“It’s grown every year,” Ramey said. “Last year, we had approximately 70 vendors, and we expect that or more this year.”
Live entertainment will again be a part of the festival. Magician Mark Wood will perform during a pair of 30-minute shows, one at 1 p.m. and the other at 3 p.m. The local band Mindbender will perform from 4 until 6 p.m.
The Harvest Festival will also have a chili cookoff, sponsored by BB&T. The first-place chili chef will receive a $300 prize, while second place will garner $200, third place will be given $100 and a People’s Choice selection will receive $100 for his or her chili culinary skills, as well.
Ramey said she is accepting a total 12 chili cookoff contestants. Individuals will vie for the cash prizes, while businesses can compete for bragging rights.
Also on the schedule is a doughnuteating contest, with sponsorship provided by Sheetz. “You just sign up for that on
the day of the event,” Ramey said. She noted that the contest is divided into three age categories and is judged on time rather than consumption volume. Each entrant receives three doughnuts and he or she who consumes the doughnuts the fastest wins a prize.
Activities for children will include inflatables at the park, as well as a petting zoo, face painting, hayrides and a mobile video-game trailer.
