19-year-old gets 55 years for firing at officer
PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — A 19-year-old Peoria man was sentenced Friday to 55 years in prison for firing shots at a Peoria police officer.
Tony Harris was convicted in November of attempted murder for shooting at officer David Logan early last year. Harris was 17 at the time.
No one was injured, but Circuit Judge Steve Kouri said at the sentencing hearing in Peoria that it’s lucky neither the officer nor Harris was killed. He compared shooting at a police officer to throwing gasoline on a fire.
The judge also sentenced Harris to 30 years for aggravated discharge of a firearm, which he’ll serve concurrently with the 55-year sentence.
The (Peoria) Journal Star reports (http://bit.ly/1dfNcML ) Harris could be eligible for release in 46 years and nine months with credit for “good time.”
