Montana officials identify Canadian skier killed at resort
KALISPELL, Mont. (AP) — Officials in northwestern Montana have released the name of a Canadian skier who died after falling into a tree well at Whitefish Mountain Resort.
Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry said Monday that 56-year-old Charles Douglas Herr of Calgary, Alberta, died Friday.
Herr was skiing with a friend when the pair became separated. The friend reported him missing shortly after 1 p.m. and his body was located at 3:15 p.m. in a tree well — an area with little or no snow around the base of a tree.
Herr’s death was the second on Big Mountain this winter. A snowboarder fell into a tree well on New Year’s Eve and suffocated.
