Vernon Maxwell Due in Texas Jail
HOUSTON (AP) _ Charlotte Hornets guard Vernon Maxwell was expected to turn himself in to Harris County authorities today to begin serving a 90-day sentence in a 1995 marijuana possession case, KTRH-AM reported.
County authorities asked North Carolina police to arrest Maxwell after Court-at-Law Judge Don Jackson issued a warrant Tuesday. The judge took the action after being told that the player’s appeals had been exhausted.
Hornets team officials had said Maxwell was aware of the warrant, but that the team understood Maxwell could resolve the matter after the NBA season. Not so, said Harris County District Attorney John Holmes.
``There’s no bond, no appeal,″ Holmes said. ``He owes the state of Texas 90 days. We’re not running a hotel. It’s not, `Come in when it’s convenient.‴
In October 1995, Maxwell was stopped for running a red light, and a small plastic bag containing a gram of marijuana was found.
