Danbury firefighters awarded for life-saving actions
DANBURY — Firefighters from the city’s D Platoon were awarded the Green Cross from the Hurst Company for their life-saving actions last year.
The Green Cross is “the symbol of recognition for those who have used Hurst Jaws of Life products to save lives,” according to the Hurst Company.
On July 27, 2018, a two-vehicle accident on Newtown Road left three people trapped in vehicles with life-threatening, traumatic injuries.
Firefighters quickly got to work rescuing the trapped victims, using a set of hydraulic Hurst Jaws of Life tools and four Hurst eDraulic rescue tools.
The position of a trapped driver in one of the vehicles made it difficult for responders to perform a modern dash-lift maneuver, so they used an eDraulics jaws with chains to free him by a more traditional method known as a “steering wheel/dash lift.”
The victims were turned over to paramedics and taken to the trauma center.
If it weren’t for their rapid extrication, a hospital trauma coordinator determined, the outcome for all three victims would not have been as favorable as it was, with all three eventually recovering from their injuries.
