Philly homicide captain reassigned amid high murder rate
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The head of the Philadelphia Police Department’s Homicide Unit has been reassigned as the city records the highest number of homicides in more than a decade.
Police department spokesman Jeff Chrusch says Capt. John Ryan is leaving the unit Friday. A new homicide captain will be named the same day.
Chrusch did not specify the reason for Ryan’s transfer, only saying that it is one of several command changes that have happened over the past few weeks.
Ryan has led the unit since July 2017.
He has not responded to requests for comment.
The move comes as police have recorded 346 homicides this year as of Wednesday. The tally is the highest since 2007, which had 391 homicides.
