State Police: Racing Cars Caused 4-car Crash on I-495
LOWELL -- The cause of a four-vehicle crash on Interstate 495 northbound was the result of two cars that were racing, police say.
State Police trooper Brian Murphy said from the scene there were no injuries due to the wreck that took place near the Woburn Street exit shortly after 7:30 p.m.
Ahmad Sami, who was driving a Mercedes SUV with his wife and children, stood next to his damaged vehicle along the side of Interstate 495 shortly after the wreck.
He said his family noticed the two cars racing a “few exits back.”
“They must have been doing 100 miles an hour,” Sami said.
After the crash, Sami hit the breaks on his SUV, and was rear ended by another vehicle.
According to Murphy, one of the drivers who was racing was part of the wreck, while the driver of the other car sped off.
A SUV flipped over during the crash, but Sami pointed out the driver was walking around apparently uninjured shortly after.
The crash caused traffic to back up on Interstate 495 leading to the Woburn Street exit, but the roadway remained open.
There was no immediate description of the vehicle that fled the scene.
