CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Miami Hurricanes wide receiver Ahmmon Richards will no longer be allowed to play football because of a disabling neck injury. The 16th-ranked Hurricanes made the announcement today without revealing specifics of the injury, or how it happened. Richards appeared in 21 games with the Hurricanes over parts of three seasons. He caught 74 passes for 1,382 yards and six touchdowns. He hasn’t played since Miami’s opener against LSU, catching one ball for nine yards

UNDATED (AP) — Notre Dame has moved into the top five, while Texas and UCF reached the top 10 in the latest Associated Press college football poll. Notre Dame reached a season-high fifth after beating Virginia Tech on Saturday night. Texas jumped 10 spots to No. 9 after beating Oklahoma, which fell to No. 11. UCF came in at No. 10. Alabama stayed No. 1, with Georgia second, Ohio State third and Clemson No. 4.

DENVER (AP) — Rockies left fielder Matt Holliday is returning to the starting lineup for Game 3 of the NL Division Series against Milwaukee. Colorado is trying to avoid elimination after dropping two straight in Milwaukee. Holliday has a hit and a strikeout as a pinch-hitter in the NLDS. The 38-year-old is starting for the first time in the series. The Brewers are starting 38-year-old catcher Erik Kratz for a second straight game. He had two RBIs on Friday.

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves have to win the first postseason game in their new ballpark tonight to extend their season. They’re down two games to none in their best-of-five NL Division Series against the Dodgers. Atlanta was outscored 9-0 and outhit 10-9 in losing the first two games at Dodger Stadium, where Los Angeles slugged five homers.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — The San Jose Sharks have placed forward Joe Thornton on injured reserve. Thornton has returned to San Jose after experiencing swelling in his surgically repaired right knee. He won’t be available until at least next Sunday. The Sharks recalled center Dylan Gambrell from the AHL on Sunday to take Thornton’s place. The 39-year-old Thornton is coming off his second straight year undergoing reconstructive knee surgery.
