Deputies file lawsuit against DuPage sheriff

November 22, 2013

CHICAGO (AP) — A federal lawsuit accuses DuPage County Sherriff John Zaruba of retaliating against deputies for supporting union efforts and refusing to contribute to his election campaigns.

The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1i1x3iF ) that seven sheriff’s deputies filed the lawsuit Thursday in U.S. District Court in Chicago. They allege that they were demoted or passed up for promotions for not supporting Zaruba politically.

The sheriff’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

According to the lawsuit, some of deputies were demoted or denied promotions because they supported another candidate or filed labor grievances.

One of them, Stjepan Josic, says his position on the bomb squad was eliminated and then later filled by a deputy who supported Zaruba’s campaign but had no bomb squad training.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.
