Police: Reedsburg child dies from religious fasting, parents arrested
Two parents are under arrest after one of their children died during a religious fast, according to a release from the Reedsburg Police Department.
Police arrested Kehinde S. Omosebi, 49, and his wife Titilayno A. Omosebi, and charged both with neglecting a child causing great bodily harm after police discovered their children, a 15-year-old and 11-year-old, emaciated. The 15-year-old was found dead, while the 11-year-old was alive, but extremely emaciated. Police also discovered Titilayno Omosebi emaciated, but she refused treatment for religious reasons, according to the release.
Kehinde Omosebi walked into the Reedsburg Police Department at about 4 p.m. Sept. 2 to report the death of his 15-year-old son on Alexander Avenue, according to the release. Omosebi said the child died Aug. 31.
Officers responded to the home and forced entry, as the doors were padlocked from the inside, according to the release.
Kehinde Omosebi described himself as a religious minister affiliated with Cornerstone Reformation Ministries, according to the release. He and his family started a 40-day fast July 19. Officers located no food in the apartment.
The 11-year-old was taken into protective custody and medically treated before being transported to American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison.
An autopsy is scheduled for Sept. 3. The Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory will assist Reedsburg detectives.
