HALLANDALE, Fla. (AP) _ Sir Cat won the $100,000 Appleton Handicap by 5 1/2 lengths at Gulfstream Saturday over a depleted field.

Fifteen horses were entered in the Grade 2 race, but only five started after heavy rains forced the mile and a sixteenth feature to be switched to a sloppy main track.

Wild Event was second, Kingcanrunallday third and Dixie Bayou fourth. El Gran Fernando was last.

Sir Cat, ridden by Jerry Bailey, was timed in 1:42 3/5 and paid $3.20, $2.40 and $2.10. Wild Event paid $3.20 and $2.20. Kingcanrunallday paid $2.20 to show.

It was the third straight decisive stakes victory for the 5-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Storm Cat owned by Richard Golden, following wins in the Knickerbocker Handicap at Aqueduct and the Tropical Turf Handicap at Calder.
