SW Missouri St. 77, SMU 64

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) _ Allen Phillips scored 23 points and Scott Brakebill added 19 as Southwest Missouri State beat Southern Methodist 77-64 on Thursday night in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament.

With SMU (21-9) ahead 23-21 with 10:12 left in the first half, the Mustangs failed to scored on their next seven possessions while Southwest Missouri ran off 11 straight points in taking a 43-31 halftime lead.

SMU narrowed the margin to 48-42 with 16:58 remaining before Southwest Missouri opened a 13-0 run to go up 61-42 with 14:12 left.

Brakebill controlled the second half, scoring 13 points and grabbing eight rebounds.

The Mustangs shot just 34 percent from the floor, including 5-of-28 on 3-pointers, and 52 percent from the line.

The win was revenge for Southwest Missouri, which lost to SMU on Dec. 4 when the Mustangs took a 70-60 victory for the title of Southwest Missouri State Pizza Hut Classic.

DeWayne Floyd was SMU’s leading scorer with 15 points and Quinton Ross added 13.

Southwest Missouri (23-10) advanced to a second-round game against Mississippi (18-13) next week.
