Storm Leaves One Dead, Dozens Injured

PARIS (AP) _ Violent storms swept through districts east and south of Paris tearing off roofs, uprooting trees and injuring dozens of people, officials said Sunday. One man was killed when a tree fell on his car.

Andre Gaudre, 53, was killed on a road near the town of Rethel, 110 miles east of Paris, Saturday night, said a local police spokesman. Gaudre’s wife, Christiane, 52, was hospitalized with minor injuries, the spokesman said.

Police officials said workers were trying to restore electricity to about 5,000 homes in the area.

Hail and high winds damaged a crowded shopping center Saturday in Torcy, 20 miles east of Paris. Two people were seriously injured and 33 others were slightly hurt, according to fire officials in Torcy, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Witnesses said hail the ″size of small eggs″ damaged the roof and broke windows at the Continent shopping complex. Most of the injured were hit by flying glass.

The shopping center was evacuated and fire officials said water threatened to cause the roof to collapse.

In the town of Evry, 20 miles south of Paris, three people were seriously injured and 25 others suffered minor injuries in traffic accidents caused by the storm, fire officials said.
