JFK’s Jeep To Be Sold on Ebay

March 8, 2001

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ The 1995 Jeep Wrangler Sahara that John F. Kennedy Jr. drove to a New Jersey airport hours before his plane’s fatal crash is being sold online by eBay Motors.

Bidding began Thursday and continues through March 18. The Jeep is listed by the Kruse International collector car auction firm on behalf of the seller, who wants to remain anonymous.

Kennedy bought the tan-and-green Jeep in 1998 from a used car dealership in Westwood, N.J., and eBay purchase includes a copy of the title bearing Kennedy’s name and Manhattan address and a photograph of him in the driver’s seat.

Kennedy died in 1999 at age 38 when his single-engine Piper Saratoga went down off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard. His wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and her sister, Lauren Bessette, also died in the crash.

The Jeep was parked at a Fairfield, N.J., airport. Its current owner bought the vehicle from Kennedy’s estate last year. The 6-cylinder Jeep has 35,884 original miles and has a 5-speed manual transmission.

In December, a 1974 BMW Bavaria once owned by Kennedy’s mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, sold on eBay Motors for $57,100 after receiving 67 bids.
