Swans, Cats into AFL preliminary finals
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — The Sydney Swans have advanced to the Australian Football League’s preliminary finals with a 13.8 (86) to 8.14 (62) win over Carlton, ending the Blues’ unexpected appearance in the playoffs.
Carlton, which finished in ninth place, secured a top-eight spot only when the AFL banned the Essendon Bombers from the playoffs over a supplements scandal.
The Swans will play the Fremantle Dockers next Saturday in Perth.
Paul Chapman booted a game-high four goals as Geelong beat Port Adelaide 13.18 (96) to 12.8 (80) in the other semifinal. The win advanced the Cats to a preliminary final next Friday against first-place Hawthorn in Melbourne.
Geelong has an 11-game winning streak over Hawthorn since the 2008 grand final.
The preliminary final winners play in the grand final on Sept. 28.
