June 25, 2015

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — Worcester police say an officer has shot and wounded a man who tried to ram officers with a stolen car.

The Telegram & Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1dh9NMp) that Chief Gary Gemme said the man was taken to a hospital with a non-life-threatening wound on Wednesday afternoon.

Police spokesman Sgt. Kerry Hazelhurst said two officers in separate police cars tried to pull over a man driving a Subaru Forester with Rhode Island license plates at about 5 p.m. He said the officers got out of their cars and the man put the Subaru in reverse in the officers’ direction.

Hazelhurst said one officer fired at the man. The officers weren’t hurt.

The car came to rest half on a sidewalk in front of a business on Quinsigamond Avenue.

Hazelhurst said an investigation of the shooting is underway.
