CAMPECHE, Mexico (AP) _ Nelson ``The Admiral″ Barrera, Mexico’s career home run champion, was killed in an accident at his house on Sunday. He was 44.
Relatives said Barrera was electrocuted when he tried to free some metal roofing that had blown into high-tension wires.
Barrera hit 455 home runs during a 26-year career in the Mexican Baseball League. He was a player-manager for the Campeche Pirates before leaving that post two months ago without formally retiring.
The league announced Barrera’s death on the top of its Web site, calling him ``one of the great figures of Mexican baseball.″ Barrera also holds the RBI record with 1,944.
Barrera, who served as director of the Campeche state sports department, hoped to continue playing somewhere so that he could also reach the career hit record.
He is survived by his wife, Elisa, and four children. Barrera was to be buried on Monday.
