Stetson 69, Bethune-Cookman 64
DELAND, Fla. (AP) _ Willie Robertson scored a career-high 19 points and Jeff Warbritton grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds as Stetson defeated Bethune-Cookman 69-64 Thursday evening.
Robertson, a 6-5 freshman from Mesquite, Texas, hit seven of his first nine shots as the Hatters (2-3) won their second straight game. Warbritton, a 6-8 senior from Valrico, Fla., helped key Stetson’s 44-32 rebounding advantage.
Stetson trailed only once in the game, but could never pull away from Bethune-Cookman (0-4) until an 8-0 run gave the Hatters a 52-40 lead on Mario Haynes’ free throw with 14:31 remaining.
The Wildcats, who lost by 44 points at Texas A&M and 66 at Arkansas, outscored Stetson 6-1 in the final minute to close to 69-64.
Warbritton was the only other Stetson player in double figures with 16.
Johnny McClenton led Bethune-Cookman with 18 points, 15 in the first half. Derricus Lockwood added 13.
Bethune-Cookman entered the game shooting just 27 percent from the field and 12 from 3-point range, but shot 53 percent (14-26) in the first half to keep the game close.
Stetson outshot the Wildcats from the field, 45 percent to 42 percent and was 23 of 39 from the line compared to the Wildcats’ 10 of 22.
