Five Katy ISD ‘Destination Imagination’ teams head to global tournament
Five Katy Independent School District “Destination Imagination” teams are headed to the Global Finals in Kansas City, Missouri this May after recently advancing in a state tournament.
Those advancing to the global competition include student teams from Seven Lakes High School, McMean Junior High, Stockdick and Beckendorff junior highs, Griffin Elementary School and Shafer Elementary School.
Fifteen Katy ISD DI teams participated in the state tournament that took place on Saturday, March 23 in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Of those 15, five teams will advance to the global competition scheduled for May 22 through 26 and will compete against more than 8,000 students across more than 15 countries, according to the Destination Imagination Global Finals website.
The Destination Imagination program helps students “gain practical life skills” through various challenges, district officials said in a news release.
“DI seeks to develop the creativity, innovation and imagination of students while working as team members to collaborate, stay within a budget and meet deadlines,” the release said.
Parents, educators and community volunteers work together to create the curriculum used in the program, the district said.
