Farmers markets in the Pee Dee help make local foods available

DANIEL NOLKER Special to the Morning NewsMay 26, 2019

Healthy, affordable food can be hard to find for some people in the Pee Dee region. Local farmers markets are working to address the need by improving access to fresh food from area producers.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, food deserts are areas that lack access to affordable fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat milk and other foods that make up a full and healthy diet. Many Americans living in rural, minority or low-income areas are subjected to food deserts and might be unable to access affordable, healthy foods, leaving their diets lacking essential nutrients.
