New Safety Light Seeks to Collar Canine Market

March 6, 1995

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Those flashing safety lights joggers and cyclists wear to warn motorists of their presence has gone to the dogs.

The company that manufactures the safety attire has adapted the device for man’s best friend.

For $13.95, dog owners can purchase the Dog Alert, a collar with a battery-powered light that automatically flashes when it is dark.

Torrington, Conn.-based Innovative Cycle Concepts Crop. started selling the collars by mail six months ago. The company said it has already sold 200,000 collars.

Sal Canino, a partner at Innovative Cycle, said the company has begun to design eight sizes for dogs and cats, as well as new collars with lights blinking all around.

Nancy Jandl, of Concord, Mass., bought the new neckwear for her two Labrador retrievers.

``People notice (the lights),″ she said. ``The cars slow down. I’m sure it’s because they see that flashing light.″
