Three Workmen Killed in Construction Site Accident
McCOOK, Ill. (AP) _ Workmen were overcome by gas at a construction site today, killing three and injuring three others.
One of the injured was hospitalized in serious condition and two others were treated and released after the accident at an excavation site at the Reynolds Metals Co. plant in this Chicago suburb.
``They were working on ground level on the exterior of an excavation. They were overcome by an unknown gas,″ said Diane Turek, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Few other details on the accident were immediately available.
One unidentified witness told WBBM radio that a gas line had ruptured, but company spokesman Terry Olbrysh said employees knew nothing of a break.
Turek said the workers were dismantling a scaffold and fell into the excavated area, a pit about 15 feet deep, after the fumes overcame them. But police said one worker was already in the pit when he was overcome, and others went in there to rescue him and fell victim to the fumes.
